Take note of everything you’re doing to keep your teeth in top condition. Make sure the following mistakes are not a part of your dental care routine.

  1. Brushing your teeth after eating

Contrary to what most people believe, scrubbing your teeth clean after meals is not a great idea. Why? Because it’s the time when your teeth are weakest, especially if you ate something acidic. If you are determined to brush your teeth after a meal, wait for at least an hour after you stopped eating.

  1. Brushing too hard

You don’t need to brush your teeth hard to get rid of bacteria and leftover food.  You just need to be thorough with how you brush. Using excessive pressure will damage your teeth and gums, which may cause issues such as tooth sensitivity and receding gums. Clean your teeth with care.

  1. Brushing too fast

Most people take less than a minute to brush their teeth. If you are one of them, you may have a problem. Experts say that you need to spend at least two full minutes brushing your teeth to reach all the nooks and crannies of your mouth and give the toothpaste time to take effect.

  1. Brushing or flossing inconsistently

If you don’t have a set schedule for your dental hygiene practices, you can suffer from bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Make sure to brush your teeth 2-3 times a day to avoid these issues.

  1. Using the toothbrush with the hardest bristles

Unless otherwise advised by your dentist, stick to soft bristles. They work just as well as hard bristles without the risk of wearing away your teeth’s enamel and injuring your gums. Remember to be gentle with your teeth.

  1. Doing everything to achieve the whitest smile

It’s okay to strive for white teeth if you don’t go overboard with your whitening efforts. Be careful of using home remedies and over-the-counter kits. Some, like using apple cider vinegar, can strip the enamel from your teeth and cause lasting damages. Consult your dentist first before trying anything.

  1. Failing to take care of your toothbrush

Once you’re done brushing, rinse your toothbrush with clean water. Leave it upright somewhere dry and open. Don’t store it in a closed or air-tight container to avoid bacteria buildup.

Just because you experience them often, doesn’t mean that you should ignore them. Keep in mind that many oral symptoms allude to serious health conditions.

  1. Using the same toothbrush for more than four months

Experts say that once you hit the four month-mark with your toothbrush, its bristles would be too broken or frayed to be useful. It won’t be able to clean your teeth sufficiently. Make sure to replace your toothbrush by then.
